This is the first in a series of fun books for five-to-ten-year-old children to read while learning emotion regulation skills. Adults and children share a smile and practice settling nerves with Isabelle and her friends on the way to the fair. Based on a real antique family chair and home-made stuffed bear, this sweet book teaches a breathing skill to relax anxiety.
This is the second in a series of colorful early reader books teaching children and adults a way to manage being alone in the dark. Tibbie is the first stuffed bear placed on the shelf at the fair. During the day she is enthralled by the sights, sounds and smells but when night falls it’s a different story.
Elizabeth found a family antique chair and homemade stuffed bear shortly after her mom died in 2017. Reflecting on this loss Elizabeth wondered what her mother’s life would have been like if she learned healthy coping skills as a young person. Instead, at the age of thirteen her mom started smoking and drinking, eventually dying from complications related to years of addiction. In an effort both to honor her namesake and provide the youngest cousin of the family a life lesson, “The Bear and the Chair” book was born. Elizabeth has plans to build the bear book series. She hopes these books offer children of all ages reading time to bond with each other while learning lifelong coping skills.
I appreciate this book. It is a remarkable, attractive, worthwhile publication teaching valuable life lessons. I think it especially nice for parents to read to children, or even, for children to read to parents. The interaction makes the book even more meaningful. And, I am glad to see classy, stylish illustrations to accompany the words, especially the browns of the bears and the chair. Good Luck. I hope your series continues! Thank you! ~ Beth D.
I love it! What a great skill to have in our pockets when we are not feeling great! And I love the illustrations! ~ Marie G.
Like you, I'm a social worker, and have suggested your book to a number of my clients. It's great how you weave a fun story with valuable skills for children to learn in a positive environment. ~ Brandon R.
